Proper Planning Prevents P155 Poor Performance

Ok, this isn’t a post about project management techniques more about me recording what I am going to do and in what order, hopefully it will help reduce my impulsive magpie-ness in buying all manner of random and not so random wargames and miniature related things.

Finish off making models from GW Dark vengeance box set.

Finish painting Crimson Fists

Perform cost analysis for 6mm and 10mm ACW miniatures and buildings for use with Ganesha Games excellent set of ACW rules 61’-65’. I like the look of both Blaze Away miniatures and Pendraken for 10mm and Baccus or Alder Miniatures in 6mm scale. I actually want to do this as a complete ‘battle field in a box’ project. Both forces and all the terrain and scenery in one A4 box file.

Develop more Hellfire scenarios and revisit some of my old 6mm sci-fi miniatures and rebase them and give them a touch up of paint. Get some 6mm futuristic terrain and buildings for playing these games. I think I will be getting most of this from Angel Barracks, I really like Michaels 6mm buildings.

Pirates! I have some Bluemoon 18mm Pirates and they are fantastic, I want to get these based and painted. I am going to start with the three figures that I can use as objective markers / tokens and then build the various Pirate forces. I will also get some ‘pirate hunters’ in the form of some Tricorn British troopers. I would like to do this as a ‘battle field in a box’ as well with tropical based terrain and scenery.

Write some home rules for using 10mm Zulus in Hellfire against some Colonial British I have. I think the rules are perfectly suited to such battles.

Hellfire by Jim Webster - rules review

I managed to find a copy of Hellfire on ebay and I must say for a set of rules that is nearly 20 years old they are very well written for generic sci-fi conflicts.
The rules focus on element basing of models and use a very nice method of showing unit morale over the course of the battle.

It is a very generic set of rules which at first glance my seem limited, however on closer inspection this means it is very easy to tailor to your game style and background.  Weapon ranges are 20” for small arms and up to 400” for main guns on tanks and the like. The rules cover everything from infantry, cavalry, artillery, bobby traps, snipers, to electronic warfare, psionic and aliens. Plus everything in between!
The main mechanics of the game are opposed rolls against fixed criteria on the “to hit” chart, using D12 and D10 depending on the type of weapons and armour you have.  The other important mechanic and I guess the core part of the rules is the reaction tables. There are several tables which are used depending on where you units reactions code begins. Once you come to a situation with unit, for example suffering a casualty, you roll on the table accordingly using a D6 and read off the result, which can be from taking cover, firing wildly back, laying down covering fire to attempting to engage the enemy more closely or fleeing.
These reaction tables make the game unique in my humble opinion, and are what allow aliens to act in a very alien manner.
Unit reaction codes are made up of eight digits, and  look something like this: 3,2,2,2,3,2,2,1 the total of which you can use to determine troop classifications. Clone warriors have 25 reaction points, conscripts 10 reaction points, as you can tell clone warriors will stick around longer in a fight than conscripts.
The rules contain several scenarios which are great to learn how to construct units with varying reaction codes as well as different scenario objectives.

All in all it is such a shame these rules are no longer in print, it is a shame Wessex Games haven’t released an electronic version along with the other supplements they made.
I am looking forward to getting some use out of my old epic stuff which is based up as elements and having a go a doing different period rule mods for WWII and Zulu wars. I also think with a little tweaking these rules will play solo very easily.

If you find a second hand copy I recommend picking this long out of print set of rules up, I am sure you will find them really playable or at least full of ideas for your current games.

Hellfire!

Well continuing with my obsession for retro wargames rules, i managed to find a copy of Hellfire by Wessex games on (fl)ebay.
I am looking forward to this arriving as i remember playing it a couple of time way back when.

Front cover
I will write a small review once they arrive and i might even get an AAR done.

more insane car thoughts......

So along with the question do Spacemarines wear socks and pant. (If they wear pants, do they go for boxer shorts, trunks, briefs, Y fronts, jock straps, thongs......)

My main quandary this morning was how many traitor marines are left? And how do they restock a traitor legion? I mean regular Spacemarines harvest the gene seed from fallen comrades to "recycle" them in new marines. But i can't imagine that followers of Khorne would do the same, they just love to fight......

So with this in mind that traitor legions don't replace marines as regular marines do, over time the traitors legions will simple no longer exist as they don't have replacements.

Square or Round...?

I was thinking again on the drive to work this morning if I should base some of my WHFB stuff on round bases and go for the element type / War of the Rings basing or stick with the traditional square bases.
I don't play at any GW stores or local gaming clubs and I prefer round bases for my skirmish games anyway.
The disadvantage with going round would be that units might look smaller due to the diameter of the round base being 25mm as opposed to 20mm square base....

Might try a few and post some pictures.

Osgiliath ruins....mini review

Ok, I have had these for a while and I thought I would take some time off from world of tanks and do some proper old school war gaming. So opening the box, you are confronted by two grey spurs that have some chunky buildings and two statues. Each spur has lots of detail and. You can even make out the individual stone mason marks on each stone. The box set allows you to make 3 ruins for your tabletop. Photos to follow, trying this on my IPad, however don't be worried, I am aiming to blogg this project through to the end!

Musings whilst driving....

Well i get to spend at least 2 hours a day driving to and from work, which gives me plenty of time to thing about the important things in life, mainly have i got my pack lunch and miniatures ....

Well today's drive was all about the new edition of WH40K and if it was worth re investing in the game or just sticking with 3rd edition?
Beast of War site has some pretty interesting video clips of the game mechanics, its seems like a mash up of 2nd edition and LotR rules. I will see how much the new box set costs in September before i take the plunge.

The other question that came to me on the drive, was "do Spacemarines wear socks?" very important if you don't want to get blisters while running around on Power Armour.

More musing coming soon!
